During World War II the United States and Soviet Union occupied a territory of Japan called Korea. At the end of the war the country was split in half and occupied in the north by the Soviet Union and in the south by the United States. Each half established its own government that was modeled after the government of the country that occupied that half. However, the goal of each country was to unify Korea under one government. The different values and leadership of each half of Korea kept this goal from being met. The picture above shows tanks from North Korea on June 25th, 1950 beginning an invasion of South Korea. This hostile act sparked the Korean War which not only affected the soldiers fighting in the war and the people in Korea but also the people in the US too.
